Synopsis in German
Captain Rick Leland (Humphrey Bogart) muss sich vor einem amerikanischen Militärgericht verantworten. Das Urteil lautet: Unehrenhafte Entlassung aus der Army.
Nach einem vergeblichen Versuch, in die kanadische Armee aufgenommen zu werden, geht Leland an Bord des japanischen Frachters "Genoa Maru". Zu den wenigen Passagieren des Schiffs gehören die attraktive Alberta Marlow (Mary Astor) und Dr. Lorenz (Sydney Greenstreet). Der dicke Wissenschaftler hat einen Lehrstuhl für Soziologie auf den Philippinen und eine Schwäche für Japaner.
Als das Schiff in New York anlegt, zeigt sich, warum Leland mit der "Genoa Maru" reist. Lorenz allerdings ahnt nicht, mit wem Leland sich in New York getroffen hat. Er bringt ihn dazu, mit ihm über seine Vergangenheit zu sprechen. Leland ist angeblich bereit, für jeden zu arbeiten, der ihn gut bezahlt. Daraufhin macht Lorenz ihm ein Angebot: Leland soll ihm Informationen über Geschützstellungen und die Luftaufklärung am Panamakanal beschaffen. In Colon gehen die Passagiere an Land. Leland fragt sich, welche Rolle Miss Marlow, die ihm sehr gefällt, in dieser undurchsichtigen Affäre spielt. Als sie nach einem mysteriösen Telefonanruf verschwindet, folgt er ihr auf eine Plantage, wo das abenteuerliche Geschehen seinen Höhepunkt erreicht.... (ARD Presse)
